I just finished the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and while it was an epic, one of a kind experience, I'm looking for some other fantasy suggestions that are different.

What I did not like about Malazan is the soft and largely unexplained magic system, and some of the side stories and contemplations that seem rather unnecessary to the main plot and can be a drag to read.

What I liked about the series was the massive scale of the world, the 'implicit' method of storytelling, and the amazing convergences at the end of every book.

Taking this into consideration, is there any series that y'all think I would enjoy? I'm looking for a lighter read - maybe something like Mistborn, which I enjoyed. The series length isn't a problem, the difficulties in reading and comprehension like in Malazan are what I'm looking to avoid. I have considered reading LOTR. However, after watching the movies and reading up on a bunch of lore, I feel like I have been spoiled enough where I can't really justify reading such massive books. I don't want to get into Stromlight Archive, since it hasn't been completed and will be a very long wait.

Vanilla stories with clear character motivations, protagonists and antagonists are fine by me, as long as the characters and the scale of the world are interesting enough. I'd much appreciate any good suggestions. Thanks a ton!
